Materials and Construction Compared
A good place to start is a comparison of the materials and construction of the two brands. Both Saatva and Tuft & Needle have developed innovative, responsibly manufactured features. We will now discuss some key differences we found from our research.
Tuft & Needle’s signature material is its proprietary T&N Adaptive foam. It’s a breathable, responsive foam that contours to your shape and then bounces back when you change position. The foam’s open cell structure allows air circulation to keep the mattress cool.
Saatva’s focus is on contouring, spine alignment, and temperature control. The Saatva Classic is a great example of this focus, with Lumbar Zone® support in its top two layers: breathable quilted cover and memory foam lumbar crown.
Let’s take a closer look at how the layers of the Saatva Classic compare with Tuft &Needle:
- Layers 1 and 2: The Saatva Classic starts with a breathable, organic cotton 3” Euro Pillow Top with Lumbar Zone® Quilting. Next, high-density memory foam offers pressure relief while the Lumbar Zone® Active Spinal Wire maintains spinal alignment. Tuft & Needle has a micro-polyamide and polyester blend cover followed by contouring T&N Adaptive foam. Depending on the model, the foam may be infused with cooling gel beads or carbon fiber and graphite.
- Interior Layers: Saatva Classic has two layers of coils: Lumbar Zone® Pocketed Coils that offer pressure relief and targeted support, and a base coil unit for sturdy support. Tuft & Needle combines layers of T&N Adaptive foam with high-density polyfoams. Some Tuft & Needle foam layers contain cooling gel beads. The Tuft & Needle Hybrid has a layer of micro-coils as well as a pocketed coil core, with a layer of T & N Adaptive foam between them.
- Edge Support: Saatva and Tuft & Needle mattresses are reinforced around the perimeter, making it easier to get out of bed. The Saatva Classic has high-density foam rails for edge support on all sides. Similarly, Tuft & Needle reinforces the edge construction of their mattresses.
Materials Safety and Certifications
Saatva and Tuft & Needle demonstrate a commitment to using planet-friendly materials in their mattresses. Both companies use foams that are CertiPUR-US® certified. That means that the foams do not contain ozone depleters or harmful chemicals such as formaldehyde, lead, or mercury. Tuft & Needle GREENGUARD Gold certified to meet strict chemical emissions standards.
Besides their CertiPUR-US foams, Saatva uses organic materials in their mattresses, such as the Saatva Classic’s organic cotton cover.
Thickness and Size Options
Tuft & Needle mattresses range in thickness from 9.5 inches to 12 inches. Saatva offers a wider range of thicknesses, from 12 inches to 15.5 inches. The Saatva Classic comes in 11.5 inches and 14.5 inches thickness. The Split California King is only available at 11.5 inches. Saatva also offers a Youth mattress that is 10 inches thick.
Both Saatva and Tuft & Needle mattress offer standard mattress sizes:

Comfort and Support Comparison
Both Tuft & Needle and Saatva mattresses offer quality comfort and support features. Tuft & Needle’s T & N Adaptive foam provides pressure relief without letting you sink too deeply. The responsive foam adapts to your every move, making it easier to move around on the surface. The coils in the hybrid model provide additional contouring, responsiveness, and support.
The Saatva Classic balances lumbar support with contouring comfort. The Lumbar Zone® technology offers support to the back, hips, and shoulders — particularly the lower back. Pressure-relieving memory foam and coils soothe the joints and cradle the body. Unlike most innerspring mattresses, the Saatva Classic luxury innerspring is available in three firmness levels: Plush Soft, Luxury Firm, and Firm.
Temperature regulation certainly adds to the comfort of a mattress, and both brands offer advanced cooling features. Tuft & Needle uses breathable, open cell foams that promote airflow. Some of their foams contain cooling gel beads or graphite for advanced temperature regulation. The Saatva Classic has a breathable, organic cotton cover that keeps things cool. Both companies use breathable coils in their hybrid and innerspring mattresses.
Price Tag
Saatva mattresses tend to have a higher price than many other brands, including Tuft & Needle. The price difference may be attributable to the use of organic materials and the complexity of Saatva’s products.
Most Saatva mattresses cost a little more than comparable Tuft & Needle mattresses. However, the T & N Hybrid costs quite a bit more than the Saatva Classic. Tuft & Needle mattresses tend to have the lowest prices of the two brands.
Shipping and Delivery
Saatva and Tuft & Needle take different approaches to delivering their mattresses to your door. Both approaches have their benefits and disadvantages, and the best option is a matter of personal preference.
Tuft & Needle ships their mattresses in a box directly to your door. Before shipment, the mattress is compressed, rolled, and packed into a container. Then it is shipped to your door, whether or not you are home. Buying a mattress in a box is convenient for today’s hectic schedules, and you don’t have to miss work or wait around for a delivery team. After unboxing, however, you will likely have to wait several hours for the mattress to fully expand and for a slight odor or “off-gassing” to dissipate.
Saatva, on the other hand, does not ship their mattresses in a box. Each Saatva Classic is made to order and comes with free white glove delivery. While it doesn’t offer the convenience of shipment in a box, the white glove option offers in-room delivery and setup, plus old mattress removal. You do have to be home for the delivery, but the mattress is ready to use right away.
At-Home Trial Periods
Both companies offer at-home trial periods for their mattresses. Tuft & Needle mattresses come with a 100-Night Sleep Trial. If you decide during the trial period that you don’t want to keep your Tuft & Needle mattress, just contact the company and they will arrange a free pickup and full refund.
Saatva, on the other hand, offers a 365-Night Home Trial with their mattresses. That gives you one year to try the mattress at home, which is much longer than most mattress brands. The only disadvantage to Saatva’s Home Trial is the processing fee that is subtracted from the refund if you return the mattress.
Warranty Terms
Tuft & Needle backs their mattresses with a 10-year limited warranty. For 10 years after purchase, the company will repair or replace a mattress or component that is found to have manufacturer defects that are covered by the warranty. Examples of covered defects include cracked foam or torn fabric.
The Saatva Classic mattress comes with Saatva’s lifetime limited warranty that covers manufacturer defects. Saatva will repair or replace a defective mattress for as long as you own the product. After the first two years, however, you will have to pay prorated fees for repairs or replacements.
Although we have compared the warranties of the two brands, you should be aware that warranty terms can change at any time. Before buying, be sure to read the latest Tuft & Needle or Saatva Classic warranty terms.
Final Thoughts on Saatva vs Tuft & Needle
As we mentioned above, we can’t tell you which mattress brand is best for your sleep needs. We have tried, however, to give you an idea of the differences between Saatva and Tuft & Needle mattresses.
The Saatva Classic luxury innerspring is a great example of Saatva’s luxury brand. While innerspring mattresses typically have a medium-firm to firm feel, the Saatva Classic is available in three firmness levels — including Plush Soft. Tuft & Needle has also put its stamp on the luxury market, with its breathable, responsive T & N Adaptive foam.
We’re impressed with the cooling features of the Saatva Classic and Tuft & Needle mattresses. From Saatva’s breathable quilted cover to Tuft & Needle’s open cell foam, both brands can help you sleep cool.
Although there are some differences, our research leads us to believe that Tuft & Needle and Saatva offer quality products. We hope that this article has helped you decide which brand for your sleep needs.
